Joys Tented Camp Samburu is a luxury tourist lodge located in Shaba National Reserve, Kenya and is the former area of Joy Adamson leopard Camp. At this Camp there lies a museum, a tribute are dedicated to Joy’s memory. Joy’s Camp Shaba National Reserve is a stunning tented safari camp in northern Kenya’s Shaba National Reserve, at the eastern corner of the Samburu, which is 314 kms from Nairobi.

Shaba National Reserve is a semi desert game reserve with a rugged hilly terrain, with great rocky kopjes (small hills) and lots of springs supporting the abundant wildlife. The landscape is similar to nearby Samburu Game Reserve with riverine forests, acacias and doum palms. Shaba National Reserve is enriched with extraordinary wildlife. Game drives will incorporate varied wildlife including gravy zebra, the Somali ostrich, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, lesser kudu, leopards, plenty of lion and herds of elephants. Shaba National Reserve was made famous for its association with the world famous conservationists Joy and George Adamson and the film “Born Free”.

Joy’s Camp is the perfect choice for discerning guests interested in a glimpse of Kenya history, as well as those looking for an authentic wildlife experience combined with the comfort of a luxury-tented camp. Each sumptuous tent is uniquely decorated with Boran/Somali cloth design, handmade glass and the vibrant fabrics of the local nomadic tribes creating a chic, sophisticated and stylish tented camp. Each tent in Joy’s Camp has its own private verandah, ideal for private game viewing as well as relaxing, reading and soaking up the truly wild environs offered by Shaba.

The eastern corner of the Samburu eco-system, Shaba is a secluded idyll; an arid landscape dotted with lush springs and Rocky River gorges. Joy’s Camp is a tribute to Joy Adamson, built in an elegant oasis in the arid lands on the site of her tented home. The camp overlooks a large natural spring where elephant, leopard and lion jostle for watering rights with herds of buffalo and the rare desert species of Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra. Many bird species can also be spotted making it a great camp for budding ornithologists.

Joys Camp is set in a spectacular area and is operated by Cheli & Peacock Camps & Lodges who operate around 15 luxury camps in Africa. Joy’s Camp is a luxury camp, no doubt about it, the safari tour vehicles are top notch, the food in particular the salads at lunch time are fantastic and the swimming pool is a real bonus, particularly if you are traveling with Children. The entire experience is first class from the welcome by the staff to the farewell at the end of the safari.

The tents are ultra luxurious and are equipped with everything you could wish for. The staff could not do enough for you; the lodge management checks on you after each game drive to find out whether you had seen animals and to enquire as to whether you would like to do something different for the next day. The attention to detail is spot on. They even arrange for you to have a full cooked picnic breakfast by the river as a surprise, transporting the kitchen and staff to the river’s edge.

You will be incredibly well looked after for your entire stay which. There are plenty of wildlife about and being built beside a spring, the waterhole is always populated with animals. The guides are very knowledgeable and will cheerfully answer any questions you have. Lara and Jamie who manage the camp are so friendly, very laid back yet attentive and constantly checking if everything is alright without being obtrusive. Other activities at Joy’s Camp include bush breakfasts, sundowners and cultural visits. Alternatively, guests can chose to relax around the camp’s swimming pool. The cuisine at Joy’s Camp is based on traditional Northern Italian food all prepared from the Cheli family cook book.

Joy’s Camp Hotel Accommodation

Joy’s Camp has seven double and three twin tented rooms set on raised platforms. Each has an uninterrupted view over the bush to the surrounding hills. The 80 sq metre, insect-proofed, cream-coloured tents have an abundance of netted “windows” to take advantage of the breezes, the views and the opportunities for private game viewing. Rooms are equipped with large and comfortable beds, bedside tables, flexible and imaginative lighting and ample clothes storage.

The cuisine at Joys Camp is traditional Northern Italian food all prepared from the Cheli family cook book. Soft drinks, beer, house wines and non-luxury spirits are included in the room rates Champagne, special wines and luxury spirits are additional.
