Heliskiing in Canada: A Powderhounds delight!

Heli skiing is the ultimate experience for Powderhounds. A helicopter, a few friends to share the experience with, an experienced guide and literally thousands of square kilometers of fresh tracks all to yourself; pure bliss!

It is not just about the skiing; the adventure of tackling slopes that only a few lucky people have done in the past, the exhilaration of the helicopter hovering overhead and landing inches away from you, getting dropped off on a mountain peak in the middle of nowhere and of course the helicopter flight itself and the spectacular views.

Heliskiing Canada offers the most diverse range of options of any country in the world; and is generally at the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Similar to heliskiing New Zealand, Canada offers a multitude of day-heliski packages throughout British Columbia. Day packages generally leave from a location near a resort or town to a “staging area” where you are briefed on the use of safety equipment, and safety around the helicopter. It is from here you are whisked to the top of the mountains in a matter of minutes where you set off on your first 1,000 to 2,000 vertical metre descent. The great thing is, when you get to the bottom the helicopter is there to whisk you back up to another peak where you get to do it all again. Generally you would do this 4 – 6 times when day heliskiing. Lunch is usually flown in by helicopter half-way through the day.

If you are a Powderhound looking to get a lifetime fix of powder skiing in one short stint, there are several operators in Canada such as Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) and Mike Weigele who offer week-long heli ski adventures. This might hurt the savings account balance and credit cards (plus the need for a second mortgage on the house!) for a while but you will have wonderful memories for the rest of your life.

If the idea of a second mortgage on your home isn’t for you, then cat skiing bc is the next best thing. Cat skiing still gives you as much skiing (and the quality is usually as good as or sometimes even better than heliskiing) without the additional buzz of the helicopter.

Accommodation for multi-day heli ski and cat ski packages is usually in a beautifully decked out remote lodge which is only accessible by helicopter or snow cat and the package generally includes all meals, lodging and heli / cat skiing each day.
