Through the FreecyclePoquoson group, I met a man named Bill who gets the bread that grocery stores send back to the bakery due to expiration date nearing, and he and I have been, for the past couple of years, meeting once a week so I can get about 10 trays (each tray has about a dozen loaves or so) which I bring to my front porch for the people in my end of town to come and take for free. This free bread really does help out some people who have limited income, and other people are simply willing to eat bread that is near the expiration date just to help keep it out of the landfill. (Entire dumpsters full of old bread are thrown out on a daily basis most of the time… my participation makes a small dent in the amount; Bill delivers huge truckloads of it to churches and missions and food banks.) Still other people use it to feed the birds (I have 13 chickens who love the extra stuff!)
