Centrally based Maidstone is perfect for a Kent holiday. You’re unlikely to find a more centrally based location, with two railway stations and close links to a number of major motorways like the M20, M2, M26 and finally the M25. Even though being set within the rural county setting of the North Downs Maidstone town centre is home to one of Kent’s best museums – the Maidstone museum & Bentlif Art Gallery, A specialist museum with some prized collections this museum is a real local gem. In operation since 1858, a couple of particularly fine collections were bequeathed by roaming Victorian notables including Julius Brenchley who kick started the museums ethnography and worldwide collection of artefacts. The museum is free admission and is opening Monday – Saturday from 10am daily. Maidstone is home to another museum – The Kent Life museum, just situated off of M20 junction 6 this popular attraction sits on a 28 acre estate. The estate was bequeathed by Sir Garrad Tyrwhitt-Drake, last in his line of this famous Kent family. Today the estate is a working heritage farm – they still grow, harvest and store hops for beer in the onsite double Oast houses.

Hazlitt theatre can be found in Maidstone’s town centre they offer a superb programme of drama, big music shows along with family shows music events and comedy. The Maidstone film society also operates from here with a programme full of independent cinema running throughout the year.

The river Medway running through the town has seen much regeneration recently, resulting in a bustle of activity and river tours along the Millennium River Park these are operated in the summer months only beginning in April boat trips vary in time from 1 hour trips to 3 hour trips and private parties are also catered for.

Archbishops Palace was once part of a huge manor handed to the archbishops of Canterbury in 1207 and was built later in the 14th century. Today this breathtaking riverside building serves as Kent’s registry office for civil birth and marriages. You will be hard pushed to find a more attractive setting for a civil wedding ceremony.

Maidstone is home to one of the UK’s most stunning castles, Leeds Castle; it has seen changes through the centuries from Saxon Manor to Norman’s stronghold and Royal Residence and finally 20th Century country retreat with interiors reworked by Anglo-American heiress Lady Baillie in 1920.

Maidstone is a shopper’s paradise with the newly built Fremlin Walk and a high street which boasts a number of major UK retailers. The Historic Bank street and Pudding lane can also be found in the town centre.

In near by Yalding you will find The brilliant Tea Pot Island well worth a visit, with over 3500 teapots on display, children can decorate their own pots to takeaway and there’s a café serving cream teas (with river views) on site. Also well worth a visit is Yaldings Organic garden complex, boasting 14 different gardens including a children’s garden too.
