Once the cage is set up, there is very little upkeep or common care that is needed for the land hermit crabs. Unlike like the dog, cats, birds or even fish, the hermit crab is considered to be one of the lowest maintenance of the exotic pets that is available on the market today but there is a few of the hermit crab facts that can help you to properly take care of your new pet.. Very little attention is needed when compared to the other pets and the upkeep needed for their fur coats for example. But the biggest question is where can you purchase a land hermit crab for your very own?
If you live on or close to the beach, you could find these lovely creatures for free. Just stroll along the beach and help yourself. Some of the souvenir shops along the beach will also sell the crabs along with the smaller plastic carrying cases. Please do not plan on keeping the crabs in this temporary case. It is really to small. One reason is because you should not purchase just one crab. The terminology hermit crab is really the wrong name for these little crabs. They really travel in packs that can be larger then 100 crabs. So, plan on as many as you think you can house. If you are not near the beach, you may find the crabs in some of your local pet stores along with some of the hermit crab supplies.
A good home to start with is a 10 gallon fish tank. It can house several crabs, just depending on how much of the hermit crab supplies you want to place in the cage. The little crabs like to climb and dig. Funny that they like two very different things. A piece of driftwood makes for a great climbing tool. Do not forget the food and water dishes. Also the ground or bottom of the hermit crab cage needs to be something they can dig in. If the temperature in the cage is not right, the crabs will dig to make a little micro habitat for their selves. A mixture of clean sand that can be purchased at the local hardware or home improvement center and the forest bedding that can be purchased at the pet stores are a good combination. Be sure to follow the instructions on the bag of forest bedding as you may have to soak this in water. Saltwater is good as the crabs do eat some of the fiber and this will help them to ingest minerals they need to stay healthy.
With even a slim budget, you can have a great looking hermit crab cage. Along with a hermit crab food and water dishes, there is a few different hermit crab supplies to make the habitate very nice for the crab.
