Baby Proofing The Home - Some Tips

As baby grows and starts to move you will soon discover that a lot of the things in your house are extremely dangerous and you will need to do your best to baby proof the house. Your best bet is to start now and to work out what will be a problem once your child starts moving. You won’t catch everything but if you get down on your hands and knees and see things from a baby’s perspective, you might be able to catch most of the dangers that would lie ahead for your child.

You may want to restrict the rooms that your child goes in at first. Generally as most people spend their time in the living room you could put a baby gate up for the kitchen and other places that are unsafe for your baby to crawl or walk into. However if you are a stay at home mother or on your own a lot with your child, you will find that making sure every room is baby safe is important.

Try to move anything valuable out of your child’s reach. If you collect ornaments and other easily broken things, try to put them high up so that your child can’t reach them. Babies and children will grab anything that gets their attention. You may also want to bolt down bookshelves and any other free standing furniture that could topple over if your child uses it to get to their feet or to hold onto. Radiators will also be an issue in the winter particularly, so getting covers or making sure baby can’t get near them is a good thing to take into account.

When it comes to the kitchen, it may be easier to keep it a baby free zone, however if you simply can’t and your baby doesn’t want to sit happily playing in his/her high chair then you might want to take the following precautions:

Get an oven lock and covers so that baby can’t open it or hurt him/herself.

Try to use to the back burners only whenever possible, so that your child is less likely to get burnt.

Install safety locks on your low cabinets but have one cabinet full of pots and pans that your child can happily play with. Having a cupboard that can be keep baby preoccupied will prevent them getting up to other mischief and hurting themselves.

Don’t hold your baby while cooking to avoid anything accidents or sudden movements.

Try to use plastic glasses and dishes to avoid breakages that will certainly occur with a baby in the house.

When it comes to the living room there are other things you can do to keep baby safe. Try to only have edible plants in the living room and if not put the others out of reach. Some species can cause illness or even death if eaten to you may want to check that your plants don’t fall under these categories.

Padding the corners of the coffee table and chairs will help avoid nasty bumps to baby’s head.
